Students alarm over graduation fees
GANTA CITY- Students and graduates of William V S Tubman High School in Kpein Township have been alarmed over the hack in graduation and registration fees.
Speaking to our reporter based on animaty, the students lamented that the administration has charged the 2023/2024 12th graders who just sat the WASSEC to pay the amount of 20,000 Liberian Dollars before their graduation.
Most of the students who spoke to our reporter disclosed that the administration held a meeting with them demanding them to pay said amount or risk not graduating with their friends.
“The principal called us in a meeting this afternoon and told us to talk to the press about the situation, saying that if we do, he is not give our documents or we will not graduate even if we pay the graduation fees.”
They further explained they are facing financial difficulties in obtaining the money and paying the graduation fees, as many of them can’t afford the amount, terming it as a burden to them.
Speaking further, one of the current senior students of the institution disclosed to our reporter that the William V S Tubman High School in Kpein is also charging them $ 4,100 LD for registration fees instead of the $ 3,000 LD mentioned by the Ministry of Education.
When contacted by the principal of the institution, Sam Karpie, he denied the allegation and said that the statement was far from the truth.
Karpie mentioned that his administration is in line with the Ministry of Education policy for collecting $ 5,000 LD for graduation fees. He asserted that he had no knowledge of what the students said.
Contrary to the principal statement, our reporter displayed a receipt obtained from one of the students who had paid their graduation fees in full; the principal admitted the signature on the receipt to be his registrar’s signature but still denied the amount written on the receipt.
Karpie refused an interview with our reporter because he was having a consultation with his staff before speaking on the matter officially through a recorded interview.
When contacted by County Education Officer Moses Dologbay, he heard the information and explained that he had dispatched a team to conduct a full-scale investigation into the matter.
Dologbay revealed that when found guilty, the principal will be made to restitute the remaining $ 15,000 LD to the students before administrative action can be taken against him.
The Ministry of Education has mandated all public and community schools to collect the amount of $ 5,000 LD for graduation fees and 3,000 LD for registration fees from students from 10th to 12th grade.
